Gurdeep Garcha QC is representing an 18 year old charged with murdering a 23 year old man outside shops on Alcester Road South in Maypole, Birmingham.
The incident, which took place in September 2019, is said to have started when the victim and his wife crossed the road in front of a vehicle in which Mr Garcha’s client, and the co-defendant, were travelling.
The prosecution say the victim was racially abused before being punched and kicked to the head, resulting in ‘catastrophic’ brain injuries from which the victim never recovered.
The case involves complex pathological evidence as to causation of the fatal brain injuries.
The trial, being heard at Coventry Crown Court, is expected to last three weeks.
