Miss Akhtar represented Mr K, a 64 year old man who was charged with serious sexual offences against a child including attempted rape.
Mr K denied all the allegations and was unable to say why the girl was making up such serious allegations. There were two trials; at the conclusion of the first trial the jury were unable to agree upon their verdicts and the prosecution decided to retry the case.
At the conclusion of the second trial after a very sensitive and careful cross examination of several very young children by Miss Akhtar the jury concluded that Mr K was not guilty of sexual assault and again were unable to reach verdicts upon any of the other counts against him. The prosecution decided not to retry Mr K again and therefore not guilty verdicts were entered upon all remaining counts
