Inquests and Inquiries

The Citadel team of inquest barristers provide legal advice and representation to any family, individual or organisation who have any degree of involvement or interest in an inquest in the Coroner’s Court. Members also accept instructions to represent individuals, companies or other organisations involved in any Public Inquiry.

The members regularly appear at inquests, representing bereaved families, individuals or companies who may have caused or contributed to a death, employers, government departments and local authorities or other organisations whose conduct is under scrutiny, insurers, and other interested parties. They aim to provide practical and expert legal advice with compassion, sensitivity, and respect, recognising that inquests can be very emotive proceedings. Nevertheless, all members of the team are committed to robust and fearless representation of their clients, even where the cause might seem unpopular or difficult.

Our members can provide expert advice and representation in a wide variety of cases, including deaths arising from road traffic accidents, breaches of health and safety legislation, hospital or care home or other medical error or neglect, unlawful killings, deaths in police and prison custody, and suicide.

Members of the inquest team appear at inquests throughout England and Wales, and also undertake coronial appeals and judicial reviews of coroners’ decisions and verdicts.

Most members of the Citadel inquest and inquiries team are registered with the Bar Council and can receive instructions directly from members of the public, companies or other organisations without the need to incur additional expense by instructing a solicitor. In most cases, fees can be agreed and fixed in advance, with a flexible set of rates designed to meet the needs of individual cases and to ensure that effective representation is available to all.  If you are considering instructing a barrister directly, to advise on any aspect of coronial law or to provide representation at an inquest or public inquiry, please contact the clerking team who will be happy to provide further information.
