Rachel Brand Q.C. secures acquittal for man charged with murder

Rachel Brand Q.C. represented one of two defendants charged with the ‘brutal’ murder of a man in Erdington.   During the 13-day trial atBirmingham Crown Court, both defendants denied any part in the attack, and asserted that the other defendant was solely responsible for the murder.

In the early hours of 29th December 2012, Stephen Downes had been struck numerous blows with a metal baseball bat, causing severe head injuries. His body had been dumped outside the block of flats where both defendants lived, and was found the following morning by refuse collectors.   

Anthony Bull was convicted of murder, and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years’ imprisonment.     The trial Judge, His Honour Judge Patrick Thomas Q.C., described it as ‘ … a particularly brutal murder, without a clear motive …’

The Jury returned a not guilty verdict in relation to Miss Brand’s client.
