Rachel Brand QC defends as two men are acquitted of Nicola Payne’s murder

  • News

Two men have been cleared of murdering Nicola Payne, who disappeared in Coventry in 1991.

The jury at Birmingham Crown Court acquitted Nigel Barwell and Thomas O’Reilly after three days of deliberations. The prosecution had argued that new forensic techniques linked a tent owned by Barwell to Nicola Payne, but the defence argued the original police investigation had been ‘sloppy’.

Rachel Brand QC defended Thomas O’Reilly and told the jury that the case was brought to court because of the ‘desire to provide answers for the Payne family’, despite there being no compelling evidence.

Reports of the case are available from the BBC, The Guardian and the Birmingham Mail.
