Simon Rippon secures acquittal in the country’s longest-running human trafficking trial

Following a 5 month trial in Croydon Crown court the jury unanimously found Simon Rippon’s lay client not guilty on all counts. He was acquitted at the first opportunity the jury were given to return verdicts. It had been alleged that he was part of a significant conspiracy to traffic hundreds of women from several European countries into England, where they were forced to work as prostitutes in several cities including London and Manchester.

The case involved European arrest warrants, forensic scrutiny of bank accounts, computers and mobile telephones, special measures including video-link with witnesses in Hungary, and criticism of the investigation named ‘Operation Birkhill’ by the Metropolitan police.
