Trevor Meegan has appeared in the first such trial to take place outside London. The defendant faced a prosecution under the Serious Crime Act and Computer Misuse Act. He had posted a link encouraging people to join a co-ordinated cyber attack on the Home Office website, in 2012, which caused the website to crash, and had also encouraged web users to join a Distributed Denial of Service attack on the constituency website for the Home Secretary, Rt. Hon. Theresa May MP. The Crown asserted that the accused was a ‘cyber warrior’ and a member of the international activist hacking group ‘Anonymous’. Anonymous are a worldwide network who have been held responsible for highly sophisticated hacking activities against Government agencies, corporations, the police and religious organisations.
