Gurdeep Garcha KC and Curtis Myrie are defending a 65 year old West Bromwich man who is standing trial at Birmingham Crown Court accused of the murder of a 36 year old woman whose body was found in a Tipton canal a week after she was last seen alive.
The defendant is said to have engaged the woman who was working as a sex worker and taken her to his home address in West Bromwich. There he is alleged to have viciously beaten her. Thereafter he is alleged to have been assisted by his adult daughter in disposing of the body. The pair are said to have taken the deceased woman’s body to the canal side in a wheelchair, where they stripped her body, weighed it down with paving slabs before throwing it into the water.
The defendant has pleaded guilty to preventing a lawful burial but denies murder.
The case features a large body of CCTV evidence as well as scientific evidence, much of which focuses on the impact of submergence in water and the effect on the availability and recovery of forensic evidence thereafter.
The trial is expected to last three weeks.
Mr Garcha KC and Mr Myrie have been instructed by Darryl Foster of Foster Mohammed Solicitors, Pure offices, Broadwell Rd, Oldbury B69 4BY.
