Daniel White recently defended Edward Spencer, who appeared before HHJ Lockhart K.C. in Leamington Justice Centre, for three offences of causing death by careless driving and three offences of causing grievous bodily harm by careless driving. Mr Spencer drove carelessly by speeding on a country road resulting in a collision with another vehicle. He had no memory of the events due to the injuries he sustained. The deceased were three of Mr Spencer’s school friends (aged 16 and 17 years) and those that suffered grievous bodily harm were the passengers of a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
His case received considerable media attention, in part, due to the fact that Parliament is debating the introduction of laws restricting newly qualified drivers in terms of number of passengers.
Mr Spencer pleaded guilty shortly before his trial and was sentenced to two years detention in a young offenders institution.
