Timothy Hannam KC and Nicholas Tatlow are prosecuting Billy Allison who is standing trial at Stafford Crown Court accused of murder following a fatal one-punch attack.
The incident occurred the night of the 24th of May at the Ricco and Loren bar in Lichfield. Allison delivered a punch to the back of Matthew O’Gara’s neck, before going on to strike another member of O’Gara’s group twice. He then left the bar via the back entrance and stayed in a Lichfield hotel, where he was arrested at 5am the following morning.
The force of the punch caused a haemorrhage to the base of Matthew O’Gara’s brain, who subsequently passed away two days later at Birmingham Queen Elizabeth hospital.
Allison denies the charges of murder and section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent, but admits to manslaughter and inflicting grievous bodily harm contrary to section 20.
The trial continues. Timothy and Nicholas were instructed by CPS West Midlands.
